R.O.I. Economic Consulting produces estimates of metropolitan
area consumption for five building materials
|
Portland cement
A hydraulic cement produced by finely grinding clinker, which consists mainly
of calcium silicates, and usually one or more forms of calcium sulfate as an
interground additive. Clinker is the fused product of a kiln.
|
 |
|
 |
Masonry cement
A hydraulic cement for use in mortars for masonry construction usually
consisting of portland cement and hydraulic lime but can contain slag cement,
pozzolans, chalk, calcareous shall, talc, clay, hydrated lime, or limestone.
|
|
Aggregate
A granular material made of sand, gravel, or crushed stone. Aggregate is used
in construction for the making of portland cement and asphalt concrete, mortar,
grout, and roofing shingles. It is also used as a base course for pavement and
grade slabs, as well as in agriculture, drainage systems, roof ballast, and
landscaping. Aggregate is classified by size and gradation.

Ready-mix concrete
Portland cement concrete manufactured for delivery to a purchaser in a
plastic and unhardened state. It consists of portland cement, aggregate (crushed
stone and sand), and water. Fly ash, slag and other pozzolans can be cement
substitutes. Other additives can change characteristics of ready-mix concrete.

Other concrete products
All portland cement concrete products except ready-mix concrete, such as
